Iao UCC—A Brief History

Iao United Church of Christ was founded in 1895 by the Hawaii Evangelical Association (predecessor of the Hawaii Conference United Church of Christ) as an outreach to Japanese plantation workers in Wailuku. The church was called "Wailuku Japanese Christian Church," and all of the services were in Japanese.

During World War II, the name was changed to Iao Congregational Church, and all of the services were held in English. In 1957 Iao Congregational Church joined the United Church of Christ, and in 2010 the name was officially changed to Iao United Church of Christ.

Throughout its history, Iao United Church of Christ has welcomed the newcomer, stood with the powerless and offered ministries of hope. The congregation now reflects the diversity of the population of Maui, and leadership is shared in true congregational fashion.

Iao UCC is a member of the United Church of Christ (USA)
